On a cold winters day you arrive
You have travelled many a mile across the frozen landscape
Cautious at first
Gaining a boldness as you come closer
You may be small
but you carry yourself with assurance,
Driven by a curiosity it draws you inward
I have seen your footsteps
cutting patterns across lakes and back ridges
silent, relentless,
seeking ways to survive in the harsh bitter cold
challenging what nature throws in your way
It has been many months since you have visited
I am thrilled to see you
moving with grace, seemingly gliding through the snow
You stay but for a short time
just long enough to come close to say hello
and then you are gone
once again moving unnoticed through the night
But I know you are there
I have followed your steps, cutting long endless patterns
winding, searching, always moving
You are always welcome here
So come and sit for awhile
Rest, be easy
before you start your long journey again
